W B McInnes Jean

oil on canvas

120 x 94 cm

This is the first of three portraits of his daughter that WB McInnes exhibited in the Archibald Prize; the other two were in 1924 and 1934. Known as Jean, Laura Jean McInnes (later Phillips, 1915-1991) would later study art herself and work as an art teacher.

The 1922 Archibald portrait is likely to be the work titled Jean now in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia. That painting was also exhibited in the Society of Artists Exhibition in 1922, where it was mistitled Joan.

McInnes won the Archibald Prize this year with another portrait, of Professor Harrison Moore.
