TRAVEL WITH FRIENDS IN 2009
Travelling with the Art Gallery Society offers so much more than simply an art tour overseas. Our tours for 2009 are carefully designed around members’ cultural interests and led by Gallery curators and educators and arts specialists, providing a fuller, richer and more meaningful travel experience. In 2009 Brian Ladd begins the year’s travel program by celebrating New Year in New York visiting many of the city’s dazzling art collections. Art critic and historian, Christopher Allen, travels to Sicily following in the footsteps of Homer and Caravaggio. Special exhibitions curator, Terence Maloon, follows the pilgrim’s trail from Montpellier to Compostela. Seasoned tour guide, Liz Gibson, visits the glittering jewels of the Adriatic and former curator of architecture and design at the Powerhouse Museum, Anne Watson, tours the Nordics tracing the development of modern design in this fascinating corner of the world. China and Japan feature too. Specialist writer and author on China, Linda Jaivin, takes a five city tour to the country of the past, present and future. And, Ann MacArthur, Japanophile and senior coordinator of Asian Programs at the Gallery, discovers the Japanese art of the seasons. Rounding off the year, Liz Gibson travels back to Europe to explore some of its rich collections of visual art spending New Year in Berlin and Russian Christmas in St Petersburg. For practicing artists there is a special tour with painter and etcher Neil Moore in Italy designed for those who wish to spend their days drawing and painting the Umbrian countryside.
