Artist’s statement

Inspired by the Amish belief in dance as a satanic pursuit, my work explores the concept of dancing with the devil. By combining the Amish perception of dance as a distraction from their normal agrarian lifestyle and rhythm of life, with the Western notion of dance as a form of escapism, I wish to depict dance as a channel of self-expression.

Influencing artists: Daniel Crooks, James Jean, Egon Schiele, Mike Parr, Jenny Saville

Collection connections

Mark-making is an integral part of both Maya Le Bransky’s and Mike Parr’s practices. Study the use of line in these works. Describe the types of lines. How do they convey emotion and what emotions do they convey?

Make sketches of the human form using a variety of mark-making techniques. Change the types of lines – thick, thin, sharp, soft, broken, quick – to heighten the emotive quality of the work.
