Artist’s statement

My artwork explores how we’re left guessing at the psychological reality of others, as appearance, words and actions can never convey our inner consciousness. Like the gaps in the wire figures, we are left to presume, deduce, judge. This ambiguity and impenetrability is the ultimate barrier to really ‘understanding’ a person. The idea grew from my studies of Shakespeare’s characters Othello and Iago, and a revealing talk I had with my sister after a fight. She told me the thoughts driving her typical 'teenage’ actions and attitudes, which I had been completely oblivious to until that moment.
