When creating my works I sought to explore issues surrounding global warming, human destruction of the natural environment, unsustainable industrialisation and the depletion of fossil fuels. I have a great personal interest in these issues and felt that they are also of great prominence in society. I have created large works, accompanied by smaller works, to depict the natural and the human environment as I predict they may be in the future if they are not cared for.
Influencing artists: Jackson Pollock, Andy Devine, John Virtue, Anselm Kiefer, Jane Frank, Franz Kline, Clyfford Still
'I like simple, practical, emotional, quiet, vigorous art. I like the simplicity of walking, the simplicity of stones.’ Consider this quote by Richard Long and discuss how Southern gravity reflects his point of view. Debate in class the significance of the image and its role in communicating ideas.
Read Alexander Martinoli’s artist statement and discuss how Southern gravity advocates Martinoli’s passion for the environment. Develop an exhibition proposal that includes works by Long and Martinoli focusing on issues related to the natural and built environment. List the other artists or artworks that would be included and justify their inclusion.
