Artist’s statement

Approaching the HSC, I knew I wanted to tackle a social issue. I decided to explore the loss of innocence in child soldiers who are forced to face adult issues like war and death. I used blocks, Lego, children’s books, paint, paper and 46,000 Hama beads to highlight the childhood that is lost when these children are forced into situations of war. By including two removable puzzle pieces I created an artwork which appears to be a game in its entirety. I chose to create a large-scale work to make the artwork as confronting as possible.
