Artist’s statement

I adopted as a reference point the explorations of sculptural planes in the work of the Russian constructivist Naum Gabo, but in the context of a chess game. The accurate cutting and joining of the various parts to form a coherent whole was demanding; giving the cardboard the appearance of rusted steel was a trial and error process.

Collection connections

Consider the play of illusion versus reality in the artworks created by Giulio Paolini and Christina West. How successful is the artist in creating this juxtaposition? Discuss, in particular, the materials used, subject matter, composition and positioning of each artwork.

How does each artist attract the viewer? Respond as an observer and discuss your relationship with each artwork. Consider the type of media used and how this affects the way we 'see’.

Both works draw inspiration from past artists and art styles. Identify these influences and discuss how West and Paolini have each added their own unique quality to their works. Discuss the appropriation of artworks and art styles in contemporary art practice.
