Artist’s statement

My work acts as a warning to humanity such that if there is a continuation of the destructive trends that transpire parallel to the world’s expanding societies, there will be severe consequences beyond the powers of redemption. The fact that these trends of society continue to get worse was the main reasoning behind this body of work. I wanted to show society how they can change.

Collection connections

Investigate the following contemporary issues as portrayed in the media: global warming, mass media culture and the war in Iraq. Outline how Marcus Dixon has drawn on such broad issues through the symbolism in his artwork.

List the theatrical techniques Dixon and Auguste Rodin have used in the presentation of their artworks. Discuss how these techniques communicate a sense of weight and seriousness to the audience. Identify how the body language and gestures of the figures make them seem like actors playing out a dramatic narrative on a stage. Assess how the process of working with models is similar for both Dixon and Rodin.

Examine how the naturalistic, expressive surfaces of the hands in Rodin’s sculpture contrast with the forensic, high-fidelity detail of Dixon’s photograph of a hand. Discuss why hands, along with faces, are so effective in communicating people’s emotional states.
