Newtown High School of the Performing Arts
My work is an exploration of my family history; it follows the journey my great-grandparents took from Italy to Australia 80 years ago. The concept of the slip-cast bottle as vessel represents the metaphor of the sea journey. In my use of glazes, oxides, screen-printed text and wax emulsion the surface treatment provides a bilingual narrative of the journey.
Propose the many possible and original, everyday functions of the objects used in these artworks by Vanessa Mendez and Yoon Kwang-cho. Investigate how each has been transformed by the artists to become a vessel for spirituality, binding the past with the present. Analyse how each artist has created a holder and transmitter for narratives of identity.
