Indian Folk Paintings & Textiles
29 May - 4 July 2004
Asian Gallery, Ground Level

In the rich visual culture of India, painting and the decoration of everyday objects has had a long and meaningful history. From the deftly painted religious pictures bought by pilgrims at the bazaars to the auspicious murals of village and tribal India, folk painting constitutes an important aspect of everyday life. This exhibition draws on paintings and pictorial cloths from the Gallery's collection to show the richness and diversity of India's vernacular art traditions. This exhibition will be accompanied by a performance programme.
