30 November 2002 - 27 January 2003
(Except Christmas Day)
Project gallery, Ground Level
Portrait of a Painter, India, 17th C.
Portrait of a Painter. Illustration from an album, India, 17th century. On loan from the al-Sabah Collection, Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah, Kuwait National Museum

Some of the finest examples of Islamic art in the world are on exhibition from the al-Sabah Collection formed by the members of the Kuwait Royal Family. These include jewel-encrusted objects, rare ceramics and finely detailed miniature paintings and calligraphy. Many of the objects were made for princes, shahs, sultans and merchants. They chart the history of patronage in shaping Islamic art from the eighth to the 18th century spanning regions from Spain across the Middle East to India.
