Utagawa KUNISADA/TOYOKUNI III Contemporary tale of the three villains 1860. Bequest of Kenneth Myer 1993 | An exhibition of the famous and infamous characters immortalised in Japanese literature, poetry and folklore. It includes great heroes from Japan’s past, such as the indomitable samurai who fought in the 12th century battle for national leadership, as well as portraits of Japan’s most popular kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers of the Edo period (1615–1867), when the hedonistic ‘floating world’ flourished.
