Debra Phillips From the series 52 Sidelong Glances

Phillips's new series of photographs are derived from the copper plates engraved from the drawings of botanical specimens collected during the Endeavour voyage (1768-1771). Phillips worked with the plates in the British Museum from which Joseph Bank's Florilegium was finally printed in the late1980s. Phillips draws an analogy between the forms of mechanical reproduction used in print making and photography, and their respective roles in conveying information about the 'new' world to the insatiably curious old world. This work extends Phillips's interest in museum collections and the historical records that document early European exploration of the Pacific.
