Grand in scale, technically ambitious and highly finished, the 'exhibition watercolour' dominated Victorian art exhibitions where it was intended to compete with the grandeur of oil painting. Yet it remained a medium uniquely adapted to render the effects of light and the fleeting movement of nature.
