René Patrick Gimpel is the grandson of the Paris art dealer, René Albert Gimpel (1881-1945). Gimpel snr visited Giverny and faithfully recorded Monet’s appearance and conversation in his book Diary of an Art Dealer, and in other essays. He himself owned Monet's Barque Bleue, Barque Rose and The Artist's Garden at Vétheuil (NGA, Washington). Gimpel died in Neuengamme concentration camp. His three sons were all decorated Resistance fighters. Two of them set up Gimpel Fils gallery in London immediately after the Second World War, while the third remained in Paris and was the author of Against Art and Artists, the Cathedral Builders and the Medieval Machine. René Gimpel, grandson, is presently preparing a new edition of his grandfather’s Diary of an Art Dealer, due out in early 2009. René Gimpel has lectured and given interviews on subjects drawn from his own extensive experiences as a prominent art dealer. He is highly regarded for his knowledge of many of the wider ethical issues surrounding the art market, in particular the current hot topic of resale royalties, known in France as the ‘Droit de Suite.’
