Art Adventure Tours
Join our specially trained volunteer children’s guides on an Art Adventure Tour to introduce K–6 students to the Gallery’s collection. All tours are written to complement the K–6 syllabus and the most appropriate subject links are highlighted in each tour description. Information sheets contain tour details as well as pre- and post-visit activities.
Learning to look

A fun introduction for young visitors to the Gallery and to different ways of looking at and interpreting a range of artworks from the collection. This tour is recommended for all first time visitors and provides children with an opportunity to develop their own visual arts vocabulary through discussion, exploration, activities and role-play. It is the perfect complement to other Key Learning Areas and as a starting point for exploring visual culture both in the Gallery and in everyday life. Themes linked to classroom activities can be requested as part of the tour.

Let’s look back: every picture tells a story

Uncover stories and legends, history and culture in artworks throughout the Gallery’s European and Western art collections. Explore how art can tell us about our past, our present and maybe even our future! Let’s look back makes historical subject matter and stories accessible to children through comparisons to their own experiences, knowledge, imagination and interests.

Tour through the Australian and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collections and discover the people and places of Australia and how artists respond in unique ways to its diverse environment.

Experience country and culture through Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art from the city to the desert. Follow ancestral travels and learn about creation stories through contemporary Indigenous paintings, prints and sculpture.

Adventures in Asia
Tour through the Asian Gallery using storytelling, role-playing and practical activities.
During the tour students will:
- Imaginatively explore destinations from the realms of the Hindu gods to a Buddhist temple, from an ancient Chinese tomb to the emperor’s palace, from a small Japanese tea room to a samurai’s castle
- Recognise a variety of materials and techniques including ceramics, ink painting, stone sculpture, lacquer and metal work, textiles and prints
- Hear stories and myths which bring to life religious beliefs and traditions
- Identify symbols and discover their meanings
- Explore links between customs and traditions in Australian and Asian families and communities
- Recognise and respect Asia’s contribution to world culture
