Welcome to Education Online, the Gallery's dedicated space for students, teachers and lecturers. The Art Gallery of NSW is the state's leading art museum and one of Australia's foremost cultural institutions. It holds important collections of Asian, Western and Australian art (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art), and presents some 40 exhibitions annually, including two - ARTEXPRESS and Operation art - featuring student art works. We are committed to making the Gallery's collections and exhibitions accessible to diverse and growing audiences. Education coordinators for K-6, years 7-12 and tertiary studies have developed wide-ranging, enjoyable, stimulating and relevant programs, and a range of valuable educational resources that will assist you with your visit to the Gallery or in your own professional environment. Gallery visits offer students formative, even life-changing experiences in the presence of original works of art. We have consciously developed the programs to strike a balance between educational outcomes and personal enrichment, seeking the widest possible relevance. Our primary focus is on interpreting and exploring the visual arts through the Gallery's collections and changing exhibitions. Such investigations also provide many cross-curricula opportunities amongst the disciplines of history, English literature, languages, Indigenous studies, studies of religion, architecture and science, and can lead to new learning opportunities. Our programs have been developed by Gallery education coordinators with contributions from outstanding teachers and lecturers, and consultants from the NSW Department of Education & Training, Board of Studies NSW, the Association of Independent Schools, Catholic Education Office, and NSW colleges and universities. This ensures that our programs meet the highest standards and expectations of diverse audiences. Finally, please explore Education Online's other links to Your Visit (bookings and excursion information), Resources, myVirtualGallery, InsideARTEXPRESS and the Brett Whiteley Studio - which offer further in-depth encounters with the Art Gallery and art. We look forward to seeing you at the Gallery soon. Brian Ladd Head, Public Programs |
