The Art Gallery of New South Wales tertiary education programs are designed to facilitate student access to the permanent collections, temporary exhibitions, resources and specialist staff. Our aim is to assist and advance the studies of undergraduate and postgraduate students from the widest possible range of disciplines and to promote the Gallery as a centre for academic research. Please contact the Public Programs booking office with details of date, time, student numbers and exhibition or collection area. To receive the special educational group concessional rate for exhibitions: - Please book early to avoid disappointment.
- Students booked in as a group are eligible for discount admission. All students must present at the ticketing desk together as one group - Student arriving without the group will be charged full admission
- Payment must be made in one group payment upon arrival at the exhibition ticketing desk - credit card, cash or cheque.
- The Gallery is pleased to admit the accompanying lecturer free.
Gallery floor talksDiscussion tours of the permanent collection and some temporary exhibitions, led by specialist educators or curatorial staff, are available for small groups of 20 or less. - Duration: 60 minutes
- Bookings: A minimum of 2 weeks' notice is required
- Depending upon availability of Gallery staff, free to NSW-based and publicly-funded tertiary audiences
- Non-NSW students and those from privately-funded institutions: $200 for 20 students or less
Specialist talks and lecturesSpecialist lectures on the permanent collections and some temporary exhibitions are available for larger groups. Content can be tailored to specific needs on request. - Duration: 60 minutes
- Bookings: A minimum of 2 weeks' notice is required.
- Depending upon availability of Gallery staff, free to NSW-based and publicly-funded tertiary audiences.
- For non-NSW students and groups from privately-funded institutions, there are fees for the use of the lecturer, AV staff and lecture theatre. Fee structure available from the Public Programs bookings office.
Also offered are Gallery Orientations which include introductory lectures on the Gallery's history, on line resources, curatorial practice, exhibition management, public programs and education. Artist and curator exhibition talksGallery talks and lectures are presented in conjunction with temporary exhibitions and collection exhibitions. These are held on weekdays at 1pm or 3pm or 5.30pm Wednesdays; and occasionally on Saturdays. Coming talks... Symposia and conferencesSpecial full-day or half-day events accompany major exhibitions. Prints and drawings study roomThe Study Room provides public access to the Gallery's collection of works on paper including prints, drawings, watercolours and photographs. Research LibraryMonday-Friday 10am-4pm Wednesdays until 9 pm in conjunction with Art After Hours The Research Library is a non-lending reference library which specialises in monographs, exhibition catalogues and art journals. Established as a resource for the professional staff of the Gallery, the Library reflects the strengths of the Gallery's collection. As well as an historical emphasis on Australian and British art, extensive holdings relating to Asian art, European art, contemporary art and photography have been acquired in recent years. The Library Archive includes a major collection of primary material on Australian art and artists including, among others, the papers of Margaret Preston and Max Dupain. Film at the GalleryFilm programs are carefully designed to extend the scope of major exhibitions. These encompass rarely screened cinema classics, important documentaries, shorts and experimental films.
