Taisho chic: Japanese modernity, nostalgia and deco22 May - 3 August This exhibition explores the simultaneous clash and embrace of modernity and tradition on the arts and design of Japan in the Greater Taisho period (1900-30). About 70 paintings, woodblock prints, kimonos and decorative arts showcase the changing role of women and lifestyle in this transitional period. Organised by the Honolulu Academy of Arts. This exhibition will display 35 of these most extraordinary sculptures. $5 per student for booked school groups Teachers holiday workshop Building Buddha: tour the exhibition with Gallery educators. Discuss Buddhism, symbolism and the works of art and experiment with clay and sculpture techniques to develop ideas for the classroom. Friday 10 October • 2-4.30pm • $35, $30 for AGS members and tertiary students • includes afternoon tea & educational materials Monet and the Impressionists11 October 2008 - 26 January 2009 This superb exhibition from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, which has one of the world's finest collections of Impressionist paintings, presents 60 paintings, including 30 by the master of impressionism, Claude Monet. Accompanied by works by Cézanne, Manet, Degas, Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley, the selection will highlight the breadth of Monet's interests, his influences and the influence he exerted on his contemporaries from the 1860s until the summit of his fame in the 1900s. Art adventure tour Monet, Monet, Monet: encounter a world of colour, light and texture. Discover Monet and his fellow impressionists, their influences and the people and the places they painted en plein-air. Tuesdays - Fridays • with the children's guides • free with $5 exhibition entry Studio session Viewing the gardens through Monet's eyes: connect the art of Monet and the impressionists with the Royal Botanic Gardens' living collection of flowers and plants as featured in Monet's garden at Giverny. This practical workshop, held in the Botanic Gardens adjacent to the Gallery, will provide inspiration and practical experiences for students to produce their own plein-air artwork in the style of Monet and the impressionists. A partnership program between the Art Gallery of NSW and the Botanic Gardens Trust. Note: this studio session time does not incorporate viewing the exhibition. Please allow time either before or after this session to do so. Years 5 & 6 • 1.5 hours • $187.50 per group of 15 or less Teachers preview Director Edmund Capon and curator Terence Maloon will present insights into this landmark exhibition's genesis, the history of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts' Impressionist collection, key works and artists in the exhibition, and Monet's essential role as catalyst and leader of the impressionist movement.
