Artist Workshops: Asia

Calligraphy workshop Surrounded by the artworks in the Asian Gallery, students are tutored in traditional art by Asian artists. Select from:

Creative Calligraphy
Practice styles of writing with brush and ink from ancient pictograms to free-flowing cursive expression.

Spirit of the Brush
Learn the techniques of brush and ink as expressed in Chinese mountain landscapes and Japanese Zen painting.

Taking Tea
Join a Japanese tea ceremony as a guest in the Gallery's Tea Room to experience the customs and aesthetics of art appreciation (Thursdays only).

Studio Sessions

Life drawing Drawing the Figure
Years 10-12 only
Draw from a live model exploring the form of the body and its place in space, while experimenting with different approaches to drawing, using a variety of media. Be inspired by the Gallery as studio setting working amongst the great works of the European collection in the 'old courts'.
Please note: Model is in leotard or partly clothed only. For unclothed life model classes see the Brett Whiteley Studio.

Portrait of the Student as an Artist
Years 10-12 only
Incorporating costume, props, the Gallery's collection and the students' experience as both model and artist, face off with the self-portrait and portrait in the Gallery studio setting. Discover the role of both model and artist, often one and the same, while experimenting with different approaches to drawing, using a variety of media.
