Gallery Educators Course

Gallery Educators Course

The Art Gallery of NSW offers regional gallery public programs and education staff and Visual Arts teachers the opportunity to participate in a specialised Gallery educators course.

Contents

Overview

Presented biannually, this intensive program, while originally designed for the Gallery's own educators, is now available to the regional gallery network and the Visual Arts education sector. The next program will take place in April 2010.

Regional gallery staff and Visual Arts teachers will participate in the program with the Gallery's educators, known as teacher-lecturers.

In opening up the program to the regional galleries network and Visual Arts education sector, it is believed there will be beneficial outcomes for their educators and audiences, as well as the Art Gallery of NSW through working more closely and networking with their Visual Arts education colleagues.

Program outline

The program introduces the Gallery, its collections and the Public and Education Programs Department's role, activities and strategies in gallery education and working with original art objects and audiences.

It includes sessions on:

  • the Gallery's collections, their rationales and key works: Australian 19th-20th century, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Asian, prints, drawings and watercolours, photography, European modernism, European 15th-19th century, contemporary and sculpture
  • the Gallery's history, departments, broad operations and infrastructure
  • Public and Education Programs Department mission, audiences and program strategies across the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions
  • secondary school programs and strategies across permanent collection and temporary exhibitions
  • looking and interpreting strategies across objects and collections
  • engaging audience strategies
  • working with students with disabilities
  • floor talk presentation logics and logistics
  • structuring floor talk presentations
  • NSW Visual Arts syllabus and related issues
  • child protection issues, risk assesment and duty of care
  • the Gallery's Research Library and Archive, research strategies and resources
  • the Gallery's study room for works on paper and other associated Gallery resources

The program is presented by key Gallery staff including:

  • assistant director/general manager of curatorial services
  • senior and assistant curators
  • head of public programs
  • senior education and public programs coordinators
  • coordinator of Aboriginal programs
  • coordinator of contemporary art programs
  • coordinator of Asian programs
  • senior teacher-lecturers
  • senior volunteer children's guides
  • head of human resources

Outcomes

The program, while specifically focusing on the Gallery, its collection and programs, and strategies for working with audiences, will be relevant and applicable to any Gallery or Visual Arts education context. The program also offers a forum to discuss relevant issues with colleagues across the Visual Arts education spectrum.

The program will also unpack the Art Gallery of NSW and the Public and Education Programs Department as a vital professional development and program support resource.

The program is an invaluable opportunity for regional gallery staff and Visual Arts teachers to network with a range of public programs/education colleagues from the Art Gallery of NSW and beyond.

A certificate of participation is awarded at the end of the course.
