Stage 1: school visit
Gallery educators and a practising artist visit the selected school and present an intensive day-long program that "takes the Gallery to the students". This includes:
- discussion about the nature and role of art in relation to the syllabus such as the Frames and Conceptual Framework
- an introduction to the Gallery
- a focus on the practice of the visiting artist
- an interactive workshop session with Year 11 and 12 students developing ideas for their HSC body of work

Stage 2: Gallery visit A visit to the Art Gallery of NSW for 25 students from the participating school for an intensive one-day program. This includes: - 'behind-the-scenes' visits to Gallery departments, including Curatorial, Conservation, Registration, Research Library and Archives
- floor talks and practical workshops with Gallery educators
- discussion and workshop with a prominent artist talking about his/her art practice and work in the Gallery's collection
- viewing a major current exhibition
- lunch provided by the Gallery's caterers, Trippas White

Stage 3: mentorship
Students from each school who have particpated in both Stage 1 and 2 during the year are invited to apply for a short but intensive mentorship at the Gallery.
The most outstanding applicants from each of the participating schools will attend a two-day mentoring program focusing on:
- a particular area of interest within the Gallery, such as curatorial or conservation
- art-making workshop with a prominent artist
- deeper investigations into the working of the art world
