Student Programs
Collection and Exhibitions
Guided Discussion Tours, Study Mornings, Artist Workshops and Studio Sessions within the collection and exhibitons are core programs for the Years 7-12 students.
These engaging and informative programs are led by Education Coordinators and our specially trained Gallery Educators known as Teacher-Lecturers. All programs emphasise the experience of original works of art through an inquiry-based, skills development approach to learning, focusing on looking and interpreting, responding and discussion.
The aim of these programs is for students to:
- engage directly with a diverse range of original art objects across the Gallery's collection
- develop a greater understanding and enjoyment of art
- formulate and articulate their own ideas and critical points of view
- explore the diverse contexts art operates within and reacts to including, spaces, places, cultures, times, histories and narratives
- investigate the professional practice of artists as valued members of society
- experiment with and manipulate art materials and processes in their own art making
- value the diverse range of ideas and points of view contributed by others in the experience and investigation of art
Discussion Tours focus on looking, questioning, interpreting and responding.
These tours may also incorporate a range of stimulus material, props, practical activities and materials. For small groups of up to 15 students.
Duration 60 minutes.
Cost: $127.50 per group of 15 students or less
Artist Workshops and Studio Sessions focus on experiences in art-making with art educators and practicing artists using the Gallery spaces as a studio setting.
These programs promote practical skills, experimentation with materials, and understandings of processes and practices evidenced within the Gallery's collection.
For small groups of up to 15 students.
Duration: Artist Workshops 60 minutes, Studio Sessions 120 minutes.
Cost: Artist Workshops $187.50, Studio Session $255.00
per group of 15 or less
Study Mornings focus on introductions, investigations and interpretations of selected gallery collections or major exhibitions, designed to promote looking and interpreting skills, empowering students when viewing original artworks in the gallery spaces. Usually presented through a slide talk format, which may also incorporate a video or performance component.
Recommended for large groups, up to a maximum of 300 students.
Duration 60 minutes.
Cost $3.00 per student
Access Programs, linked to the collection and some exhibitions, are available for:
- students who are deaf or hearing impaired
- students who are blind or vision impaired
- students with intellectual disabilities
- gifted and talented students
- geographic, economic or culturally disadvantaged students
Teacher Professional Development
Collection and Exhibitions
Engage with the gallery's permanent collection and temporary exhibitions as a core resource for teaching practice and classroom programming as well as opportunities for professional networking and personal enrichment.

This gallery and studio museum provides a unique space where Years K-12 students and teachers can gain a personal insight into Australian lyrical expressionist painter, Brett Whiteley. Exhibitions change regularly and displays of the artist's sketchbooks, materials, personal memorabilia and music reveal his inspirations and illustrate his art practice.
