Programs and activities
Through the Gallery, there are many ways to enjoy art, to learn, be inspired and become involved.
Our programs includes films, music and performances as well as tours of the permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions (some in Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese and Auslan), exhibition talks by curators and other experts, lectures and symposia, and courses and a rich and diverse range of community events.
Many of these are on Wednesday nights when the Gallery stays open late for the enormously popular Art After Hours.
Most programs and events are free; however, charges apply to others and a few must be booked in advance. Some events are arranged by our members organisation – the Art Gallery Society of NSW – but these are usually open to everyone (and so is Gallery membership). The listing for each event on the website includes these details and links to online or phone booking, if needed: see Exhibitions and events.
There are special education programs and materials designed for primary, secondary and tertiary students, teachers and lecturers, including students with an intellectual disability, gifted and talented students, Indigenous students and those from disadvantaged schools. See Education.
You can do your own research in our research library and archive, either in the Gallery or online.
We publish quality books, exhibition catalogues and reproductions of some artworks (posters, postcards etc), which are available through the Gallery Shop along with other merchandise.
We share our expertise in other ways through various outreach and mentorship activities and by developing partnerships with other people and organisations locally and globally.
