About
The decoration of amorous couples in garden settings reflects a taste for the art of the French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721). Though the painter had died decades earlier, engravings of his work and of that of his followers were widely imitated by porcelain decorators from c1740, particularly in Germany.
