About
Bamboo was an evocative subject for a 'nanga' artist, as literati tradition had long used it to symbolise strength and nobility of spirit. Here the skilful variation in ink tone suggests a rustling breeze and evokes the intimacy and quiet of a small bamboo grove. According to the inscription, Sohei is emulating the late Ming artist Wang Jianzhang (see Acc.no 265.1991), many of whose paintings are preserved in Japan.
