  • About

Utagawa Hiroshige (also known as Andō Hiroshige)
specialised in pictures of the ‘floating world’ or 'ukiyo-e',
with a particular interest in landscapes. This woodblock print
presents the view from the pine beach of Awazu north
to Mount Hiei on the western shore of Lake Biwa, the
largest freshwater lake in Japan. Recognisable by its
distinctive jagged shape, Mount Hiei is a sacred Buddhist and Shinto site that is considered home to Shinto deities and demons.

The poem in the upper right can be translated as:

    White, as when the wind
Clears away the cloud and scatters it,
The sails of a hundred boats
    Come flying to Awazu.
