About
In his celebrated prints of the Australian landscape,
Fred Williams deployed a range of lyrical marks on an empty
ground, creating a graphic language that conjured the
teeming vastness of the bush. His distinct interpretation of
the continent was closer to the experience of being within
its unenclosed spaces, rather than merely looking at them. From 1957, Williams made trips to the countryside outside
of Melbourne to observe the land and distil its essential
elements. In these prints, he lifts the horizon line, so the
terrain extends and feels immense. His fast and direct
mark-making evoked the rough textures of the bush and
its endless variety of idiosyncratic forms. -
