Fred Williams was a major painter and printmaker whose innovation and technical mastery as an etcher has had a significant impact on Australian printmaking. His memorable images of the Australian landscape were greatly enriched by his large oeuvre of etchings on the subject. He began making etchings in 1954 as a student in England with images of theatre performers, but turned to landscape for his subject upon his return to Australia in 1957. 'Knoll in the You Yangs' is one of twenty etchings by Williams in the collection.
