About
Born in England, Walter Withers studied at the Royal Academy, London before arriving in Australia in 1882. He studied further at the National Gallery School, Melbourne 1884-87 and in Paris 1887-88. One of the celebrated Heidelberg group of landscape painters, Withers won the Wynne Prize for landscape in 1897 and 1900, was President of the Victorian Aritsts Society and a trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria. He lived in the house 'Charterisville' in Heidelberg, Creswick (where he taught both Percy and Norman Lindsay) and in Eltham for the last ten years or so of his life. This is the only drawing by Withers in the Gallery's collection and is from the remains of a sketchbook with Heidelberg and Eltham subjects.
