Artist Statement:
“Five years ago, I made my first trip to Uluru and I have subsequently been back every year.
Why did it take me this long to go and what has compelled me to keep going back?
I feel honoured and privileged to have had the opportunity to travel the world. Nothing has struck me so deeply and on so many levels as Uluru.
I am lost for words.
I knew it was not to climb, however the choice to climb as a visitor is still an option. I watched in dismay as people would scale the sacred site. There is a sign at the base, requesting not to climb, highlighting the cultural protocols as well as the dangers of climbing.
A poetic line ‘to contemplate, not conquer’ – echoed deep within me.
In a historic decision, the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Board of Management decided they will close the climb to the top of Uluru on 26 October 2019.
With this news, visitors have flocked by the thousands to climb Uluru before it is closed.
The time to be polite is over.
‘Hey Fuckers’ is a declaration.
Not to respond to or rebut.
Or to speak or stake claim.
Just listen.
Stop.”
