About

The vogue for watercolours and the sustained public interest in national landscape collide happily in the work of J. J. Hilder. Queensland-born, he was essentially self-taught in the watercolour medium, which he commanded with an authority equalled only by Hans Heysen and Blamire Young. Timber getters takes its cues from the Heidelberg School, Sydney Long and the English aesthetic movement, with Hilder supplying his signature touch of atmospheric fluidity. The image coheres for the viewer from pools of pure colour. Hilder's early death from tuberculosis robbed Australian art of a unique sensibility, though a substantial body of his work survives.
