About
Kokei has revived the 'ukiyo-e' tradition of depicting individual actors in specific performances. He does his own drawing, blockcutting and printing, unlike in traditional practice where the artist did only the drawing. While consistent with the conventions of 'ukiyo-e', the prints have a compelling power and a certain malevolence that generates an unease at odds with the purely visual pleasure of traditional 'ukiyo-e' prints.
