About
Victor Pasmore was a follower of Walter Sickert. Pasmore's figurative works of this period are basically realistic in treatment. As Bruce Laughton describes: "The surface areas of these canvases suggest sub-division into rectangular proportions of the whole… For example in 'The Suffragettes' the horizontal bar running along the back of the wall parallel to the picture plane is placed at roughly one third from the top of the canvas, while below it on the left side is another rectangular shape, which cuts the vertical edge of the canvas at about one third from the bottom, and also the bottom horizontal edge at one third. Within this scheme the shapes of the three human figures are rendered rather flatly, in dark but rich Sickert-like colours. The static quality given to the design by these proportions… emphasises the stillness of the suffragettes as they listen to their verdict in the dock of the courtroom."
