  • About

The subject illustrates an episode from Lord Byron’s poem Mazeppa (1819). Mazeppa was a Ukrainian page who was punished for his illicit affair with a noblewoman by being tied naked to the back of a wild stallion and sent galloping across uninhabited plains and through dangerous forests.
