When he worked in pastel on black paper, as in this case, another dimension is added, suggesting night or something sombre.
'... I wanted to get a picture in glowing, rich autumnal colours that would convey the kind of anxiety/not anxiety, sort of melancholy of autumn. I always react fairly strongly to weather conditions. Autumn - never comfortable, particularly in England. It always conveys the ending of things to me.
