In 1550 Ghisi was invited to Antwerp by Hieronymus Cock, the leading northern publisher of the period. This is one of the five large engravings Ghisi made for Cock's publishing house. It reproduces at virtually the same size a panel painting by Bronzino, executed in the late 1530s for Filippo d'Averardo Salviati of Florence. Ghisi added a number of details to the composition such as the walled town in the background and the wreaths held by two angels. In later states the wreaths contain verses in praise of Our Lady.
