About
Born in Australia, John Salvana studied at the Art Society in Sydney in 1897 and in 1912 under Frank Calderon (1865-1943) in London. Later he was a theatre artist in Brisbane.
The title of this work is from Adam Lindsay Gordon's poem 'From lightning and tempest' in 'Sea spray and smoke drift' (1867). Many nineteenth century Australian artists turned to contemporary Australian poetry for titles to their works and were called upon to provide illustrations to poetry and prose in the periodicals of the time. Gordon (1833-70) was a popular poet in the 1890s, before his untimely death, by suicide.
