About
This is a major early watercolour which reveals something of Shay Docking's development as an artist - the influence of 20th century English Romanticism with Surrealist overtones e.g. in the work of Paul and John Nash, John Piper and Eric Ravilious. It also reveals her love of the Victorian landscape of her youth. Shay Docking's husband, Gil Docking, remembers his wife making this watercolour when she accompanied him on one of his extended stints to country centres in Victoria as an Education Officer managing the Travelling Exhibition Programme for the National Gallery of Victoria.
