About
The setting is a picture gallery densely hung with paintings, the subjects of which are all variations on a pear shape. This fruit was repeatedly used by caricaturists as the image of Louis-Philippe. It alluded to the king’s jowly face and body shape. Caricaturists also exploited the double meaning of the French word ‘poire’, which means both pear and imbecile. The crowd of portly onlookers are all Louis-Philippe in various disguises.
