About
The cyanotype was invented in 1842 by John Herschel. To produce a cyanotype print, solutions of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide are applied to a sheet of paper in a darkened room. To expose an image, the paper is placed in direct sunlight with the negative image plate sitting on top of the sensitized surface. After its exposure, the paper is washed in water. The chemical reaction that takes place gives the print its characteristic blue tone.
