About
Hilda Rix Nicholas made this drawing on a trip to Tangier, Morocco, where she occupied herself with drawing the people and activities of the local market square. The subject of the drawing sat for her portrait in the artist's hotel studio, a room she had been offered by the hotel proprietor, Mademoiselle Davin. Rix Nicholas described her as an enslaved person who had been '...freed from her duties by the death of her master and (was) looking for work' (R Travers 'Hilda, the life of Hilda Rix Nicholas' Thames and Hudson 2021 p.82). Mlle Davin persuaded the woman to sit, after Rix Nicholas had identified her as a good subject in the market. Rix Nicholas later described this work as 'the best drawing I had done in my two trips to Morocco'.
