About
William Lister won the Wynne Prize for landscape painting seven times between 1898 and 1925, reflecting his status as a respected and popular Sydney painter of large-scale coastal scenes and landscape in oils and watercolour. He studied and became established as a professional artist and teacher in London by the mid 1880s returning to Australia in 1888 to continue his career at home. Joining the Royal Art Society of New South Wales, he became vice-president 1894–97 and president from 1897–1941. Appointed to the board of trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales (then the National Art Gallery of New South Wales) from 1900, he was its vice-president from 1919–43.
This work was a finalist in the 1923 Archibald Prize and was acquired by the Gallery in 1924.
