One of a series of illustrations by Delacroix for a French translation of Goethe’s ‘Faust’. The scene is Auerbach’s tavern. Mephistopheles is seen sitting on a table and addressing a group of men who are amazed by a fire burning on the floor. Wine from the table gushes into the fire – a magical trick played on the men by Mephistopheles.
