  • About

Grant Beran received a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from Victoria University, Wellington in 1995. ‘finer and finer’ (2005) and ‘After the Annunciation (silver pixels)’ (2005), are what the artist describes as unique photochemical drawings. The process involves photographic chemicals being drawn and painted onto black & white photo paper, which is then developed, fixed and washed like a regular black and white print.

Beran works with experimental music as well visual art and photography, saying ‘visual art is my main practise, but the music is a part of the whole thing I do and can really help. For example, working in a different medium often opens up new ways of working. Working with music led me into digital photography, but in a way that mixes analogue photography – i.e. silver gelatin style – with digital. The mix of the two gives the photographs more depth and holds the eye longer than digital does.’ [email on file 8 October 2007.]

Beran has exhibited in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the USA.
