Born in 1924 in Gifu, Gifu Prefecture, Hikaru studied ceramics at Kyoto Technological High School between 1943-45, then intending to assist his father in ceramics. In 1948 he joined the 'Shinshôkôgeikai and in the same year became a founding member, along with Kazuo Yagi and Osamu Suzuki, of the avant-garde 'Sodeisha' group and participated in their shows. In 1952 Hikaru exhibited at a Kyoto gallery with Suzuki. It was around this time that he lost interest in the Song-style ceramics that had fascinated him to date. In 1926 Kikaru began the production of Craft (miscellaneous daily wares). He has participated in various shows including those of the Japan Ceramic Associaton and the Tokyo and Kyoto Museums of Modern Art.
