This head once belonged to a splendid example of Buddha sheltered by the seven headed serpent ('naga'), a popular representation of the Buddha in Southeast Asia. Stylistically the head is Khmer (Cambodian), reflecting the strong influence of Cambodia on Thai art at the period that the Angkor kings expanded into what is now modern Thailand.
