The 'Pipe smoking suite' relates to a contemporary practise of 'surfing the net' on any chosen subject. Noel McKenna is not particularly conversant with computer culture, nor a frequent user. However, he happened to be interested in a famous painting by Cezanne depicting pipe smoking ('The card players') and was astounded at the result from 'Googling' the subject, leading to the current series. His fascination with such archetypical images of human physiognomy and habits however happens to have long established antecedents, beginning in Australia with the droll, understated satire of the colonial Australian artist ST Gill.
