  • About

Rosie Kunoth Pwerl began working with batik on silk in the late 1970s when a series of adult education programs were held in the community of Utopia. Utopia comprises of seventeen disparate communities mostly consisting of extended Anmatyerr and Alyawarr family groups living close-by to places with which, under Aboriginal law, they have ongoing cultural connections.

Pwerl completed 'Untitled' 2007 during the Utopia batik revival workshop which was held over three months in 2007. This workshop included both experienced batik artists as well as those who were new to the medium. Pwerl's experience is clearly evident in 'Untitled' 2007, with its resolved composition, fine details and complex layering. The fluidity in the work is akin to the freedom of expression found in paintings by Emily Kam Ngwarray and reflects the ease with which more mature artists give visual form and individual expression to their inherited designs.
