About
Konishi Tozo works in the traditional ceramic-producing centre of Bizen, Okayama, and has exhibited at regional and national shows, including the Exhibition of Japanese Traditional Arts and Crafts, since 1972. In 1989 he was awarded the prestigious Kaneshige Toyo prize. As with Inuyama Takuya [see Acc.no. 271.2004], his work shows a modern take on an ancient ceramic tradition: the donated vessel is executed in traditional high-fired Bizen stoneware, with its natural ash glaze effects and organic feel, but the intervention of the ceramic artist is keenly felt in the modern, angular, sculptural form (suggested by the name 'koku', which means 'carved' or 'sculpted').
